A project application has been lodged for the development of McAlister Field for a new start of the art stadium, located at 3000 S Hoover Street, Los Angeles.

Designed by Crawford Architects, the proposal seeks a new stadium (27,714 square feet of floor area) to provide for women’s soccer and lacrosse on behalf of the University of Southern California (USC). The project is to honor the 50th anniversary of Title IX and is required to be integrated into the existing USC campus, with a maximum seating capacity of 3,785. The layout allows a public and private realm, oriented along the south and east sides of the playing field.

The project has been designed from stakeholder engagement and USC Campus Design Guidelines which promote Collegiate Gothic and Romanesque architectural motifs consistent with other athletic facilities found throughout the existing USC campus.

New signage (275 sq feet) is anticipated to be placed onto the primary building located at the southern side of the playing field and near the press box and at both the main stadium and the pavilion entrances. The pedestrian connection will provide access to University Avenue which connects to USC’s main campus. Stadium seating is accessed from the main concourse through vomitories that include a series of ramps and stairs.

Ground Floor
The ground floor contains approximately 11,204 GSF, which provides a private realm and a public realm along the south side of the playing field.

  • New field
  • 6-foot fencing along the 30th Street frontage
  • 12-foot-tall sports netting (east, north, and west of the stadium)
  • ADA spectator seating
  • Team locker rooms
  • Training areas
  • Public restrooms
  • Food and beverage concession areas
  • Operations and support spaces
  • Public restrooms
  • Storage areas
  • Ticketing booth
  • Stadium to the entrance
  • Six lighting poles (up to 120’-0)
  • Landscaping

Upper Bowl Level
The upper floor contains approximately 7,275 GSF, which provides an open-air pavilion and provides a viewing deck that is accessed from the main ground level.

  • 6,880 square feet Pavilion viewing deck (east side).
  • Fixed Seating for 2,285 (including 16 wheelchair spaces + 16 companion seats)
  • Standing Room Only for 1,000 people

Press Level
The press level is located high above the stadium seating, providing weather shelter to a portion and televised media coverage of the sporting events.

  • Press booths
  • Flexible meeting space
  • AV room
  • Television and radio broadcast area
  • Print press area
  • Restrooms
  • Standing Room Only for 500 people
  • Sports lighting (midfield) along the press box roof.

The proposal includes reference to 722 required car parking spaces provided within existing parking structures on USC’s campus, the Shrine Parking Structure and Village Parking Structure which are located in proximity to the new stadium.

During game events, parking for one (1) uplink satellite truck, one (1) tv truck/sprinter van, and team buses will be accommodated at the Hebrew Union Parking lot and along W 30th Street.

The proposal aims to retain the trees existing on the site, however remove those that will be impacted by the stadium concrete footings, sports lighting and a video scoreboard. New landscaping opportunities include an occupied extensive green roof at the Pavilion building as well as at the interior plaza at the main entrance.

The planners at Armbruster Goldsmith & Delvac state “the project proposes zero-foot yards to accommodate the stadium facades and the security fencing and wall along the north and west sides of the Site. The proposed wall and fence would replace existing structures in substantially the same location along 30th Street and to the west”.

“The reduced yards would allow the stadium to be built to the Site boundary and would not impact any adjacent properties as the stadium facades abut a parking lot for Hebrew Union to the south and the pedestrian mall to the east. Hence, the proposed stadium’s location, size, height, operations and other significant features will be compatible with and will not adversely affect or further degrade adjacent properties, the surrounding neighbourhood, or the public health, welfare, and safety.”

“In addition to the Los Angeles Green Building Code (LAGBC), the project will seek LEED Gold certification with aspirations of achieving LEED Platinum certification if feasible.”
